Screening of film about one man’s quest to document climate change; Chasing Ice to be shown February 12, 2014

This documentary is the story of one man's mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. Photographer James Balog conceived of the Extreme Ice Project to help tell the story of the Earth’s changing climate. Balog set up time-lapse camera equipment across the Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers, capturing ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate.

Annual symposium for Undergraduate Research Summer Institute to include address by Cal-Berkeley computer scientist Christos Papadimitriou, on September 25, 2013

The annual URSI symposium will be September 25 from 3:00-6:45pm in the Villard Room, beginning with oral presentations by five of this summer’s student researchers. At 4:15 computer scientist and keynoter Christos H. Papadimitriou will discuss “Computational Insights and the Theory of Evolution”, immediately followed by a gallery of student poster presentations on the all of the 2013 URSI projects.

Vassar trustee and alumna Christianna Wood is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst, who has over thirty years of experience managing institutional capital on a global basis. On Thursday, May 2, at 7:00 pm in the Villard Room she will discuss her background and duties as an institutional investor, her experience with divestment initiatives, industry theory on efficient portfolios, and a view of responsible investing for the future.

Writer, lecturer, editor, feminist activist, and Ms. magazine co-founder Gloria Steinem will mark the publication’s 40th anniversary with a talk in the Vassar Chapel on Wednesday, September 19 at 7:00pm, followed by a question-and-answer session. This event is free and open to the public and sponsored by the Women’s Studies program. No reservations. First come, first seated.
